Bell Let\u2019s Talk.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Westmounters are joining Canadians from coast to coast to coast today in taking part in our national conversation about mental health. Having joined the Bell Let\u2019s Talk campaign several years ago the City of Westmount annually raises the flag, helping build awareness through a post on social media and other measures.<\/p>\n

As the second year of the pandemic draws to an end the situation seems more urgent and pressing. The necessary yet disruptive response to COVID-19 has had an impact on all of us. Seniors have faced increased isolation; parents like me have struggled overseeing the zoom classes of our children; and, of course, all too many of our family and friends have become ill with the virus. We have regretfully missed family celebrations, postponed holidays and missed dinners with friends.<\/p>\n

As Westmounters and as a city we have done our best to respond to the multiple challenges we have faced together. We are proud of our Public Security team which has been reaching out to seniors and others who are unable to get out. Many have done errands or bought groceries for our neighbours or called friends and family just to check in. As a City we have promoted a wide range of initiatives including \u00a0encouraging Westmounters to enjoy the outdoors by improving our toboggan runs and skating rinks.<\/p>\n

As January comes to a close, we are optimistic as public health restrictions seem to be easing. Restaurants and movie theatres are reopening, and I urge all of us to support our local merchants who have for the most part been hard hit by the pandemic. At the same time, we are hopeful that our sports and recreation programs will soon start up again and that City services will gradually be reinstated.<\/p>\n

But Bell Let\u2019s Talk reminds us that we need to take stock and appreciate that the past two years have taken their toll on all of us. Let\u2019s continue to look out for our friends and family while taking the time to ensure our own health and well-being. I urge you to do what you can do to stay connected, such as taking advantage of programs offered by the Westmount library or joining one of the \u00a0online fitness classes that we offer or organizing a video call over dinner. And if appropriate please do not hesitate to seek professional help. The year ahead will likely be bumpy with many hurdles to overcome. In addressing them, let\u2019s keep the conversation going and continue to show the same community spirit that has been our hallmark since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n
