In order to contribute to the economic recovery and distancing efforts, the City of Westmount will temporarily reconfigure Greene Avenue. This solution will animate the commercial artery and will benefit both the population and merchants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thus, a traffic lane will be eliminated between Sherbrooke and De Maisonneuve by the end of June so that the space can be reclaimed for the summer and fall seasons. The extension of the project to Sainte-Catherine will be evaluated along the way. Summer installations will be kept in place as long as good weather permits.<\/p>\n

Parking spaces will be moved to the now closed lane and no loss of parking will be observed. The reclaimed space will allow for the development of temporary public spaces along Greene Anenue so that everyone can relax and eat while respecting social distancing measures. Summer street furniture will help to bring these spaces to life.<\/p>\n

The temporary public spaces will benefit merchants, whose indoor capacity is greatly reduced, but also consumers, whose local shopping experience will be most enjoyable and safe. The City has also amended its by-law to allow the installation of seasonal caf\u00e9s-terrasses in the public realm in front of the establishments concerned.<\/p>\n

The merchant associations were involved throughout the planning phase and the City is moving forward with their support. The City of Westmount is adapting to a new reality and will continue to evaluate its actions throughout the process of rethinking its public space. More announcements will follow.<\/p>\n
