Summer Terraces: Survey results and 2023 plan
The City of Westmount is pleased to announce the renewal of its summer terraces for 2023. First launched in 2020 as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, public terraces installed in Victoria Village, along Greene Avenue and, since 2022, on De Maisonneuve Boulevard have become much-appreciated installations that enliven local arteries during the summer months.
Last fall, a public consultation was set to determine the level of satisfaction regarding these temporary public spaces. Westmount residents, merchants and visitors were invited to share their opinion via an online survey and with interviewers on location.
Survey responses are overwhelmingly positive with 7 out of 10 people generally satisfied with the 3 locations. While some concern exists over nearby parking availability, there is a clear appreciation for the design, accessibility, safety and security of these parklets, among other factors surveyed. Overall, 8 out of 10 people expressed their desire for the summer terraces to return in 2023.
Inspired by survey results, City Council has requested modifications to the terraces for the upcoming year to better meet the community’s needs. Notably, the public space on Greene Avenue will occupy a reduced area with a redesigned footprint. Details on this summer’s installations will be shared on the City’s website in May.
Each renewal of these public spaces brings Westmount closer to a human-scale city, inspiring novel urban planning fueled by community feedback. We thank those who shared their opinions during the survey period and the previous summer season. To keep abreast of the latest projects and voice your opinion, visit Engage Westmount.
