School Street: A safer street for students at The Study
Starting December 2, a School Street pilot project will be implemented in Westmount at Braeside Place. This initiative by Levelling the Playing Fields was selected by the City to allow for a safer environment for all at the start and end of school days. The pilot project will be implemented in partnership with The Study school.
What is a School Street?
A School Street is a roadway located directly adjacent to a school that is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic during school arrival and departure times.
How will this School Street work?
On school days, from Monday to Friday, Braeside Place will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7:20 to 8 a.m. (40 minutes), and from 2:40 to 3:30 p.m. (50 minutes). The pilot project will run from December 2, 2024, to January 31, 2025. Reduced mobility and local resident traffic will be permitted at all times, and will be escorted at walking speed by on-site monitors when the School Street is in operation.
Why a School Street?
The project aims to create a safe and more welcoming environment for children in proximity to the school, in response to community concerns regarding road safety in school zones. The project is also in line with other City initiatives that promote active mobility on its territory. In reducing access for cars, students are encouraged to travel to school on foot, by bike, or by any other form of active transportation.
The pilot project will be evaluated on the basis of on-site observations as well as feedback from the community involved, including students, parents, school staff and local residents.
