Oxo-Biodegradable Bags: Not compostable
The Green Patrol’s visual inspections of Westmounters’ green bins have identified one recurrent issue: food waste in oxo-biodegradable bags.
Often mistaken for compostable, these are actually plastic bags laced with minerals. While they break down into smaller pieces over time, they don’t decompose into compost. Instead, they turn into microplastics, harming our environment.
Oxo-biodegradable bags are neither compostable nor recyclable. Please dispose of them in your regular garbage.
To ensure your food waste is properly composted, use only compost bags certified with one of the following logos:
