The Famous 5 Foundation is inspired by five Canadian women who challenged laws and conventions in our country. They advocated for women, and their efforts led to women finally becoming recognized as “persons” in the fullest legal sense. Women could vote and be appointed to the Senate of Canada from 1929 on. The work of the Famous 5 had repercussions beyond our borders as other countries followed suit and modified their legal definition of the word “persons” to include both men and women.
