80th anniversary of D-Day – Westmount Remembers

On this 80th anniversary of D-Day, the City of Westmount wants to honour and remember the brave souls who took part in this historic endeavour. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched one of the most significant military operations in history, a turning point in World War II that paved the way for the liberation of Europe from tyranny.

The City of Westmount pays homage to the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy, facing unimaginable challenges and perils. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom and democracy will forever be etched in our hearts and minds. These heroes came from diverse backgrounds, united in their determination to restore peace and justice to the world. As we reflect on their legacy, we are reminded of the enduring values they fought to protect—freedom, justice, and human dignity. The sacrifices made by these brave individuals are a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact of collective action for the greater good.

The City of Westmount extends its deepest gratitude to all veterans, past and present, who have served our nation with honour. Over a thousand men and women, residents or employees of Westmount, were on active duty during World War II. Their names can be found in the Westmount War Service Roll. We also remember the countless families who supported these heroes from afar, enduring hardships and uncertainties with steadfast resolve.

Today, we stand together to remember and reaffirm our commitment to the ideals for which these soldiers fought. As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from their bravery and continue to strive for a world where freedom and peace prevail.

Nous nous souviendrons.
